Malva Mystic Merlin
The rust-free alternative to hollyhocks — and a magical one. Malva Mystic Merlin produces tall, sturdy spikes loaded with silky, saucer-shaped flowers in a rich, mesmerising deep violet-purple intricately veined with dark maroon — a colour that shifts from deep indigo-purple to rich magenta depending on temperature and soil, forming a substantial shrubby mound that flowers tirelessly from early summer through to autumn.
- Malva sylvestris 'Mystic Merlin' — Hardy Perennial (H5)
- Height: 90–120cm | Flowers: June–October
- Sow indoors March–April or direct May; full sun
- Well-drained soil — drought-tolerant once established
- Self-seeds freely — naturalises beautifully
- Outstanding pollinator plant — bees and butterflies
Grow it with Ammi majus for a combination of deep violet spikes and white lace that is one of the most elegant pairings in the cottage garden.
