Hollyhock Nigra
Most hollyhocks are pastel and fluffy. Nigra is neither. Also known as ‘The Watchman’, this heritage variety produces towering spikes of large, single, silky flowers in a shade of maroon so deep it looks like glossy black chocolate — a dramatic architectural exclamation mark that commands attention in any border.
The dark central eye and pale creamy style create a striking contrast that draws pollinators in from across the garden. A plant of real character, and one that looks extraordinary against pale stone walls or silver foliage.
- Alcea rosea 'Nigra' — Hardy Biennial
- Height: up to 2m | Flowers: June–September (Year 2)
- Sow May–July outdoors; flowers the following summer
- Full sun; well-drained soil
- Self-seeds reliably once established
Grow it with white cosmos or pale foxgloves for a border that moves between light and shadow with real intention.
