Foxtail Barley (Hordeum Jubatum)
The most ethereal grass in the cutting garden. Foxtail Barley produces long, silky, feathery plumes in soft green tinged with purple and pink that catch the light like spun silk — swaying and shimmering in the slightest breeze with a quality that no other grass quite replicates. Outstanding for cutting fresh, where the plumes last 7–10 days in a vase.
Short-lived but self-seeding reliably, creating a permanent naturalising presence. Note: the awns can irritate skin — wear gloves when handling.
- Hordeum jubatum — Hardy Annual (H5)
- Height: 45–60cm | Flowers/plumes: June–August
- Direct sow autumn or March–May — do not transplant
- Full sun; well-drained soil — drought-tolerant once established
- Self-seeds freely — naturalises beautifully
- Outstanding for cutting fresh
Grow it with Gaura The Bride and Nigella Miss Jekyll for a border of movement, mist, and silk that is one of the most romantic combinations in the summer garden.
