Foxtail Barley (Hordeum Jubatum)

Sale price£2.30

The most ethereal grass in the cutting garden. Foxtail Barley produces long, silky, feathery plumes in soft green tinged with purple and pink that catch the light like spun silk — swaying and shimmering in the slightest breeze with a quality that no other grass quite replicates. Outstanding for cutting fresh, where the plumes last 7–10 days in a vase.

Short-lived but self-seeding reliably, creating a permanent naturalising presence. Note: the awns can irritate skin — wear gloves when handling.

  • Hordeum jubatum — Hardy Annual (H5)
  • Height: 45–60cm | Flowers/plumes: June–August
  • Direct sow autumn or March–May — do not transplant
  • Full sun; well-drained soil — drought-tolerant once established
  • Self-seeds freely — naturalises beautifully
  • Outstanding for cutting fresh

Grow it with Gaura The Bride and Nigella Miss Jekyll for a border of movement, mist, and silk that is one of the most romantic combinations in the summer garden.
