Daucus Carota (Wild Carrot)
The wild carrot — and a darling of the wildflower meadow. Daucus carota produces flat-topped, lacy umbels of creamy-white flowers that add an instant wild feel to garden borders and bouquets, swaying on tall, wiry stems with a naturalistic grace that cultivated varieties cannot replicate.
A vital platform for beneficial insects — hoverflies, parasitic wasps, and small bees all depend on its open, accessible flowers. Self-seeds freely once established, naturalising into a permanent presence in any meadow or wild border.
- Daucus carota — Hardy Biennial (H5)
- Height: 60–90cm | Flowers: June–August (Year 2)
- Sow outdoors May–July; flowers the following summer
- Full sun; well-drained soil — direct sow preferred
- Self-seeds freely — naturalises beautifully over time
- Outstanding hoverfly and beneficial insect plant
Grow it with Oxeye Daisy and Cornflower Blue Ball for a wildflower meadow combination that supports an extraordinary range of British wildlife.
