The most ornamental vegetable in the kitchen garden. Chard Rainbow Mixed produces large, glossy leaves with stems in a vivid mix of scarlet, golden-yellow, orange, white, and pink — a plant that is as beautiful in a flower border as it is productive in a vegetable bed, providing a continuous harvest of nutritious leaves from June through to the following spring.
- Beta vulgaris var. cicla 'Rainbow Mixed' — Hardy Biennial
- Sow: April–July direct; harvest: June–May (following year)
- Full sun to partial shade; rich, well-drained soil
- Sow 2cm deep, 30cm apart; harvest outer leaves regularly
- Harvest young leaves for salads; mature leaves for cooking
- Outstanding ornamental — use in flower borders as well as veg beds
