We’re very excited to be attending the Great Dorset Chilli Festival this year! To celebrate, we’re sowing our chilli seeds.
Here are some tips on when to sow your chillies and how to grow them:
When to sow: Chillies need a long growing season, so start your seeds indoors in late winter or early spring. The ideal temperature for germination is around 20-25°C.
How to sow: Sow your seeds in seed trays or small pots filled with seed-starting mix. Plant the seeds about 5mm deep and keep the soil moist. Cover the trays with plastic wrap or a lid to retain moisture.
Transplanting: Once your seedlings have 2-3 sets of true leaves, transplant them into larger pots filled with potting soil. Keep them in a warm, sunny spot and water regularly.
Fertilizing: Chillies benefit from regular fertilizing throughout the growing season. Use a balanced fertilizer with equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.
Watering: Chillies need regular watering, especially during hot weather. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
Harvesting: Chillies can be harvested when they are green or left to mature to red or yellow. Use scissors to cut the peppers from the plant.
Other tips: Chillies prefer a warm, sunny spot with well-draining soil. Consider using a greenhouse or growing your chillies in pots so they can be moved indoors during cooler weather.
We’d love to hear how you grow your chillies and any tips you have for a successful crop.
See you at the Great Dorset Chilli Festival! 🌶️🌶️🌶️
